August 9, 2018 ● 631 views
Google-backed startup Magic Leap invited The Verge to Florida for a hands-on of the Magic Leap One, a headset that projects 3D images into reality. The goggles are weird, futuristic, and surprisingly wearable — but has Magic Leap’s technology caught up to its ambitions?
What is Magic Leap One?
Magic Leap One is an augmented reality headset. It is a standalone device with its own wearable computer and head-mounted display and is chasing the market for AR along with Microsoft, Apple and others.
How much Magic Leap Cost?
It costs $2,295. For an extra $495, you can get the "Professional Development Edition" that includes an extra "hub cable" and a service called RapidReplace. RapidReplace is a resource designed to provide a replacement device within 24 hours.

Magic Leap One headset looks a bit steampunk
This device looks a bit steampunk. I can see a construction worker wearing HoloLens but not this. Since FOV is not bigger than HoloLens, I'd still rather get HoloLens as it is self-contained, no cables, rather than dealing with the "discman" clipon and cables. Also what about APIs, dev tools? HoloLens projects can be exported from Unity3D directly, and almost all UWP apps made for Windows 10 already work on HoloLens. Tracking quality on HL also seems years ahead. I expected more.
